Puppies & Kitties need love!

Pets are an important part of our lives, we are responsible for their care & safety. I love our dog so much, he is super cute, and although he sometimes gets on my nerves, he is part of our family. In an emergency, at this point, I am not sure what I would do! Obviously my kids come first, but he is definitely part of our family. So I looked up some websites that have great information on pet preparedness, & I got the FREE pet prep pack from the ASPCA. In Las Vegas, the most obvious danger is heat. NEVER EVER EVER, leave your pets in a hot car, (duh)! But also, think about a hot house, or outside too long. If you need to evacuate your home for any reason, have a plan in place for the doggies & kitties. If the only thing you do at this point is think about what you would do, hey, that is the first step! I think next time I grocery shop, I may get a few things. Muzzle, dog dish, and some extra food to put in vaccuum bags for a "grab-and-go" kit. Do you already have something in place for your pet(s)? Tips & ideas are always welcome!

What if the air conditioning goes out?

The worst thing happened last week. Our upstairs air conditioner stopped working. We turned on all the fans, & opened windows on the shady side of the house. At night, we ran the fans, the boys had cool baths & wore light clothes to sleep in. It was pretty miserable, I won't lie! However, it was not unbearable. It got me thinking, what if there were a power outage, and we had no air conditioner for days or weeks? Miserable and dangerous. Heat Stroke and exhaustion are very dangerous to the elderly and the young alike.

What is heat stroke?

Heat stroke is a form of hyperthermia an abnormally elevated body temperature with accompanying physical and neurological symptoms. Unlike heat cramps and heat exhaustion, two forms of hyperthermia that are less severe, heat stroke is a true medical emergency that can be fatal if not properly and promptly treated.

The body normally generates heat as a result of metabolism, and is usually able to dissipate the heat by either radiation of heat through the skin or by evaporation of sweat. However, in extreme heat, high humidity, or vigorous exertion under the sun, the body may not be able to dissipate the heat and the body temperature rises, sometimes up to 106°F (41.1°C) or higher. Another cause of heat stroke is dehydration. A dehydrated person may not be able to sweat fast enough to dissipate heat, which causes the body temperature to rise.

How to prevent this?
