Don't read this if you:
A. sent your kids to school today
B. Live in a large city
C. have a tendency toward paranoia
Against a morning sky, a mushroom cloud spirals heavenward. A nuclear bomb has detonated in the heart of Washington D.C., incinerating 15,000 residents in just 15 seconds. More than 50% of the population living within a 1/2 mile radius of the explosion is either dead or severely injured. The next 24 hours will determine whether the rest of the city lives or dies. To survive this horrific ordeal they will need a plan. And lucky for us--there is one. But will it work? For the first time on television, the Department of Homeland Security reveals the most detailed and comprehensive plan to save America should terrorists go nuclear. This chilling two-hour special delves into the complex and highly secretive world of disaster planning.
I set my DVR to record this interesting show last night, and had a lazy tv day, and decided to watch it. It is called Day After Disaster, it was on the history channel. I wish I had just stayed blissfully ignorant. Don't get me wrong, this was one of the best "make you get your butt in gear" promos I have ever watched. Alas, now I feel the need to get a teeny tiny bit "weirdo" and get some things to add to our list of survival gear. The Movie made me realize that no one may ever come for us. Also, if an attack has happened, the government not only plans for the "second attack" but expects it. And as always, it is not a matter of IF, but WHEN. 9/11 taught us that it can happen in a well planned & swift action. Today an 8.0 earthquake happened near Samoa, and a tsunami shortly after. Some places had only a 3 minute warming to get to higher ground.

At some point each of will be mindful of our preparation (or lack thereof) and live with the results of our decisions. /Lucky/ for those in Samoa who had three minutes warning - next time for us maybe not so lucky.
It might be a very good idea to start pulling money out of your bank accounts, stuff the money in a Mattress and hoard as much food as you can....... Buy - dry milk - rice - beans - can goods - stock up on soap and paper good etc.......
We are at war - ....... and September 11th 2001 was the day it all strated.......like it or not...... Mater of Fact, The FBI - CIA - and Homeland Security has proof that " Terrorist are in this country and ready to strike us at any time" ........If Iran get their hands on a Nuclear Weapon, you can be assured that al Qaeda will have one too.....
I wish I had known about this show! I'll check to see if it's going to be on again. Sometimes I get lax with my preparedness, just in the busy-busy of daily life.
I'm with you, SurvivalMom, it sounded fascinating! Ilia, are you familiar with One Second After? It's a NY Bestseller book that details what would happen if an EMP was detonated over American soil and what would happen. It's quite the read and definitely helps one to see further steps they can take towards preparedness. http://tinyurl.com/luwjzq
One Second After was a very good book, soon to be a Warner Brother's movie. Alas Babylon is another good book, written in the late 50's. I caught some of the History Channel program on Youtube, but they pulled it. Hoping the DVR get's it this Friday (16 OCT). Gotta love those canning sessions!

Try an old black & white movie released in 1962 called Panic in Year Zero!
This is a must see program called (AFTER ARMAGEDDON) also from the History channel lots of useful info : showes how a family of three now must learn to survive in a new world , without running water, elect, or a government.
What have past acts of destruction taught us about what will happen to mankind after the apocalypse? Is it inevitable that disaster will someday strike America on an unprecedented level? How has history prepared us?
History's most dramatic events — Hiroshima, 9/11, Hurricane Katrina and others — are examined and analyzed with hard data gathered from their massive aftereffects.
The disappearance of water and food supplies, the effects of deteriorated sanitation and health care on the remaining population, and the increased use of violence as a means of survival — all illustrate how societies have responded and survived in AFTER ARMAGEDDON.
