Not Everyone Is There to Help You

I recently read an article in the L.A. Times about a company that basically prey's on the people who have been hit by disaster. They follow in the wake of disasters and get people to trust them with their insurance money to rebuild, and end up taking off with it. Read the article HERE

You may say, "well that I would never fall for a scam like that!" However, think of your state of mind at that time. If your home is gone, all your things, uncertainty all around. A very helpful looking person convinces you he is there to help, this is his expertise. He is a volunteer, doing a charitable service for you.

The way to avoid this is to look into your home owners insurance NOW, not when the situation has already happened. Find out from your agent exactly what will happen if say, your house burned down, you want to know the step by step process and time frame. Write this information down, and keep it with your other important papers, and keep it in a fireproof safe. You should have agents cards, phone numbers and all your pertinent info there anyhow. This way, you already KNOW what is going to happen. Then you can tell the nice man that you don't need his service, your agent (who's name & number you know) is already helping.
